          Did you always know you wanted to be a writer or an artist?

          No, I didn’t.

          I have always liked to draw and I have always liked books, but I have always liked a lot of things: riding my bike, walking, listening to people talk, making things, food, music, jokes, being outside, being inside, adventures, figuring stuff out, daydreaming.

          Besides, I grew up in a small working-class town and being a writer or an artist didn’t seem like a job a real person could have.

          I didn’t know how to go about it. It took me a long time to figure it out. But here I am. (Actually, I’m still trying to figure it out.)

          To tell the truth, I don’t often think of myself as a writer.

          Perkins became a children's author almost by accident: by bumping up against a person and an opportunity.

        1. Perkins has created six picture books and three novels, moving between age groups as well as juggling drawing and writing.
